What our guests tell us

This is an extract from the 2013 edition of the where to ski and snowboard guide, edited by Chris Gill and Dave Watts. It’s the skier’s bible – Britain’s only established annual ski resort guide.
“Villard Reculas is a charming, secluded village just over the hill from Signal from Alpe d’Huez, complete with an old church and set on a small shelf wedged betwwn an expanse of open snowfields above and tree-filled hillsides below. A fast quad up to Signal has increased the village’s popularity as a base. Its visitor beds are mainly in self-catering apartments and chalets, booked through the tourist office or La Source – an English-run agency that also runs a comfortable catered chalet in a carefully converted stone barn with outdoor hot tub (it is highly recommended by reporters – ”charming chalet, excellent food, superb views, personal service, minibus transfers to and from the slopes”  says a 2012 reporter

Here is a report from the Editor of Where to ski and snowboard Chris Gill when he visited Villard Reculas on 23 January 2013.

”Wednesday brought cloud and snow to the Alpe-d’Huez area, creating the perfect opportunity to explore the minute satellite village of Villard-Reculas in the company of Michael Baldwin, year-round resident and owner-operator of La Source, a 200-year-old stone barn converted into a charming catered chalet.

In the course of touring the densely built village, in the middle of the day, we encountered one pedestrian, three cats and one moving vehicle. If you’re looking for a ski resort that is nothing like a typical ski resort, this place is for you.

La Source, too, is extraordinary. The seven bedrooms, practically all with ensuite bathroom, are adequate in size and stylishly furnished. But it’s the living room that is compelling – a lovely, spacious, stone-vaulted room at the bottom of the house opening on to a terrace (complete with hot tub) giving knockout views across a deep valley to snowy peaks beyond. It is warmly and charmingly furnished with armchairs and sofas, and a wood-burning stove.

Chef Andy has the use of a professional kitchen installed a few years back by Michael as part of a small extension, and produced from it a splendid lunch of excellent tartiflette and abundant trimmings. Chalet guests can expect to be very well fed, I reckon.

The forecast for Thursday is better, and we have the slopes of another satellite, Auris, on the agenda”.
